Sandy's Journey
OK.  I cut it -- but only a little bit. :-)

WEEK THIRTY
I really just got it shaped up a bit. I didn't like the way it hung in the back, so I asked Sheila to taper it.  She gave me a very nice cut; and although it really doesn't look shorter, I like the way it falls now. Unfortunately this picture came out fuzzy, but I wanted to put this one up here anyway to show the difference in the way the hair falls in the back after the cut.  I'll do better next time.  I promise. :-)

Here's a comparison shot. The one on the left has been shaped in the back.  I like this a lot better than the one on the right from 2 months ago that just kinda hung there.  This slight tapering even makes it hang better when I haven't done anything to curl or style it.

OK.  On to the good stuff.  At my last retightening session Sheila told me that my locks have matured to the point where I no longer need to braid and band my hair when I wash it  So I went out and bought myself some of Dr. Bronner's almond-scented liquid soap.  WOW!  I have never seen so much lather in my life!  That stuff is something else!  I squirted my normal amount on my hair, and as soon as I touched it the lather was everywhere!  When I lathered up the second time I made sure to use about half my normal amount. I've since learned that I'm supposed to dilute the soap to make shampoo. One part Dr. Bronners soap to 3 parts water. D'uh! If I had only read the label, I would have known that. Who said "reading is fundamental"? :-)

The aroma of the almond was delicious; and since this was the first time I've washed my Sisterlocks without braiding and banding, the whole experience was an absolute pleasure.  The feel/texture of my wet kinky/locked hair was almost sensuous!  And Dr. Bronner's soap actually left my hair moisturized. I didn't feel like I needed to put anything on my hair or scalp. I used a tiny bit of moisturizer only because it's the middle of a rough Michigan winter. If it had been summer I probably wouldn't have used any moisturizer at all.  My hair and scalp didn't feel the least bit dry.  Think of that -- a shampoo that really moisturizes -- naturally!  Who'dathunkit!! Hmmm... I guess this is starting to read like a commercial, huh?  I'm just trying to share my experience, and having hair that doesn't feel dry right after washing was definitely a new experience for me!

WEEK THIRTY-THREE

Can you tell I'm loving my hair?  <g>  Even after 7 months I can't keep my hands out of it.  My hair just feels SO good!  People always compliment me on it.  It's new and different, and they don't know exactly what it is, but they like it.  I'd love it even if nobody else did.  It just keeps getting better and better!

One more thing... my use of oils/moisturizers has gotten down to almost nothing.  Now whenever I wash my hair I put a tiny bit of Carol's Daughter's Khoret Ahmen Oil on my scalp afterwards.  It might be two or three weeks before I wash it again, but my hair never looks or feels dry and my scalp never gets dry or itchy or anything like that.  Now that I'm no longer traumatizing my scalp with toxic chemicals and oily, greasy goop, it has gotten used to doing what it was naturally meant to do, and it now makes the right amount of natural oils for my hair. This is great!

Here's a little something extra.  As you'll recall, I started with a couple of inches of natural hair plus 3 or 4 inches of relaxed hair.  On the left is a close-up view of one of my 7-month-old locks.  You can clearly tell where the natural hair ends and the permed hair begins because permed hair won't lock.  On the right is a close-up of some of the locks in my kitchen (the nape of the neck).  This area was broken off badly from the chemical relaxers, therefore it was very short and all natural.  These short locks (they're about an inch to an inch and a half) are all natural, and you can see what a short mature lock looks like.  I'll be thrilled when my entire head is full of all-natural locks like the ones on the right!
