Well this isn't quite 10 months because I'll be on vacation
when that rolls around. So I wanted to get these up before I go.
I've got so much to do and so little time to get it done before I leave
town. It'll be great to go on vacation and not pack rollers, curling irons,
etc. I'll be able to shower every morning without worrying about the shower
spraying my hair. I'll be able to sweat in the hot sun or take a dip in
the pool without a care in the world. This is a whole new wonderful life!
Natural natural natural is the way to go!! Afros, twists, coils, puffs,
locks, whatever.... if you're thinking about breaking your addiction to
the creamy crack (chemical relaxers), stop thinking about it and just do
it! You owe it to yourself.
WEEK FORTY-TWO
|
A very windy day in downtown Detroit. Before I went outside
I had bangs. Oh well.
It wasn't too long ago that I'd have been running for cover to get away
from the wind, or putting a scarf on my head to hold it down. But on this
day I just sat outside, let it blow my hair around, and didn't give it
a second thought. |
| And this is how it looked when I went back inside after my lunch hour.
I went back to my desk and ran my fingers through my hair. No mirror required.

WEEK FORTY THREE (9-1/2 months)
|
My first natural french roll!! This was one
of my goals when I first decided to lock my hair. I wanted to see it grow
long enough to put up in a roll. Well here it is!! Woo hoo!! |
| A side view of the french roll. I kinda like
this do. I got lots of compliments on it.
My next goal is to have it long enough that I can pull up a few locks,
wrap them around my hair and tie them for a bush or ponytail. That's gonna
take awhile, but I know I'll enjoy the journey! |
|
I'm getting some very interesting reactions from
men. Lately I'm getting lots of double-takes, compliments, and lots of
"hey-baby-can-I-go-with-you" kind of stuff from guys when I go out at lunchtime.
It's been quite a few years since I've gotten that on a regular basis...
when I'm not all dressed up and stuff. And it makes no difference
whether I just let my locks hang naturally (which is most of the time)
or whether I roll/curl them or style them in some way. The compliments
still keep rolling in. My boss compliments me, the women I work with compliment
me. Even my father compliments me, and that's really saying something!
He's 83 years old and, as you can imagine, has no use for nappy hair at
all! I am lovin' this!
WEEK FORTY-FOUR (a week shy of 10 months)
|
|
My daughter will never be a photographer. She can't
line up a picture correctly to save her life. These two are the best
of the bunch. The others had me cut off just below my mouth.
This was one of my no-mirror days. I got up, took my satin sleep scarf
off, and never looked in the mirror or touched my hair at all. Not
bad!
Why didn't I break my addiction to the creamy crack a long time ago?
|
Hey! How'd he get in here?!
My grandson Brandon can't stand to see someone taking pictures unless
he gets into the act. But Grandma doesn't mind. He's a cutie. :-)
WEEK FORTY-SEVEN (5 weeks til my anniversary!)
|
June 19, 2001: Me and my grandsons (Jaron 7 &
Brandon 5) at the African World Festival which is held annually on the
Detroit riverfront. They naturally gravitated to the booth where they were
painting the kids' faces, and of course they wanted Grandma to be painted
up too. They told me I look like an African princess. I can
think of a few other words to describe what I look like, but what the heck.
It was the spirit of the day and we had a ball. :-).
In case I haven't mentioned it lately,
