Sandy's Journey

July 2003
Three years! Amazing!

I had stopped taking pictures throughout this past year because I always wear my hair freestyle. I figured there was nothing really to show you. Then my daughter mentioned how long my hair was getting, so I thought I'd focus on the added length for this update. I didn't really start taking a lot of pictures until the spring of this year (2003).

It's amazing what a little length can do. Suddenly people who weren't feelin' the natural hair thang are now going out of their way to tell me how much they like my hair. Of course they come up with that same old tired line of "It looks great on you, but I couldn't do that". I do understand that feeling. I was there once upon a time. But I try to get people to understand that it's their own hair. Of course they can do that! Everybody can (and should, IMO) keep their natural hair texture, whether they lock it or not. It looks good on everybody, and I think it even makes people look younger. African Americans are the only people in the world who feel that they must change the natural texture of their hair. It's a shame! But I won't get on that rant today.

I gotta tell you something, though. I turned a fabulous 50 years old last year (YAY!); and with this length (which I love) and these hot flashes (which I hate), I'm having a bit of a hard time. Since summer finally got here, I'm always looking for ways to get the hair away from my face and neck. When the flashes...um... I mean power surges... hit me, I can't stand the hair. But as long as I'm not surging, I just let it hang and move around however it wants to. I just love my hair!

I'm still handling the new growth myself mostly. I get to my consultant a couple of times a year so she can make sure I'm doing everything right. Plus I just love to be pampered. Pam is great with my hair, and I love going to Everette's and soaking in the warm atmosphere.

That's enough of my musing. On with the pictures!

Happy Birthday to me!

April 2003. I wanted to do something different.
This is a wet set done on sponge rollers.
I got a lot of compliments on this do!

I gotta admit to something here. This was one of those days when I had a bad case of "whitegirlatoma". This is a term that was coined by Dr. Cornwell in her wonderful book, "A Tapestry of Dreams". I flung my hair around so much that day that I thought I was gonna get whiplash! I just couldn't help it! It wasn't a conscious action, but it just happens naturally when you get a little length and swing goin' on.

One side pulled back with a comb. I like this -- neat and easy!

This was one of those days when I was having power surges real bad.
I had to get the hair UP and out of the way!

July 2003. Three years!
These pics give a good idea of the length I've achieved. It's also the way I wear my hair 99% of the time -- freestyle.
Keep in mind that I started with about 5 - 6 inches of hair, but only 2 of those were natural virgin hair... all the rest was relaxed and has been cut off. So these pictures show my progress from 2 inches of natural hair over 3 years. Not bad!

I'm still in awe of what my hair can do now that I've stopped mistreating it.
