Sandy's Journey

July 22, 2001
It's my birthday!! I've been locked for a year!!

As you know, I took the retightening class in March and I've been taking care of the maintenance of my locks since that time, but I always intend to go back and have my hair checked out and retightened at least a couple of times a year, just so I can get some professional hands up in my head and to make sure I'm not messing up my good thang!

My locks were done on July 21 & 22, 2000. So I made an appointment with Pam for a checkup and retightening on July 21, 2001.

Happy Birthday to me!

WEEK FIFTY-TWO (1 year)
Pam has been caring for my hair over the past year, and I can't say enough good things about her. Let's just say this woman knows natural hair. And she can work some Sisterlocks!

She started on my left side and told me I had been doing a good job with the maintenance, and she found nothing that needed fixing. You shoulda seen me grinnin'. I thought I had gotten away scot free. Keep reading, and you'll see what I mean.

Sheila stepped in to work on my right side; and for awhile they were both working together. I had a lot of new growth. I had never let it go this long before but I went a couple of weeks longer than normal so I could do it on the 21st. Normally that would have made for a longer retightening session; but with the two of them working together, it didn't take long at all.
I can't keep my hands out of my hair, I think I'm looking mighty fine, I had the nerve to cut my own hair, and you just cain't tell me nuthin' no mo'!

Sheila and Pam are feeling mighty proud of the monster they created. :-)

When Sheila started working on the other side of my head, she found the one goof that I made while doing my first retightening. I lost a lock. I had hoped that with so many locks in my head, they wouldn't notice that there was one missing. I should have known better. I had mistakenly hooked two locks together and couldn't get them aloose. So I cut one out. And sure enough Sheila noticed it as soon as she started working in that area.

I haven't connected anymore locks; but if I ever do, I'll just leave it alone and go and let them fix it for me the next day. I don't know why I didn't do that the first time. Just stupid I guess.

WEEK FIFTY THREE
When I do my own retightening, I purposely don't go all the way down to the scalp. I leave a tiny bit of loose new growth so that the parts don't show. But I wanted to get the full benefit of this professional retightening so I let her tighten me all the way up. If you look closely, you can see a teeny bit of scalp; but it's surely not worth giving a second thought, and I think it looks great!
A back view. It's too short for the french roll now, but I know I have nothing but growth ahead of me and I'm going to enjoy trying various styles as my hair reaches new lengths.

Actually I set it just to do something different for the anniversary pictures; but I usually just wear my hair freestyle. I'm just not into rolling and setting and all that stuff, but it's good to know that I can do it and that even without using any kind of setting lotion -- just water -- the curls last a long time.

Feeling sassy
Loving my hair
Loving myself
Life is good!
