Dear Sandy, I had been wearing my hair naturally for four years before discovering Sisterlocks. I discovered Sisterlocks by accident after a horrible experience on a camping trip. My husband and I do Renaissance historical re-creation. We had a camping event in March of 1998 in Mississippi. It was the coldest March on record, and overnight my hair froze. Now of course being natural hair it did not freeze flat to my head, but straight up and too stiff to be combed or brushed. Now, here I am in a tent in the middle of Mississippi with my hair standing up like buckwheat. I promised myself that this would never happen again. I went into a shop to get braids and was shown a book of Sisterlocks. I had never seen anything like it. I got my hair braided in March, but I went back May of 1998 to get my Sisterlocks. It was the single best thing that I have ever done for my hair. My locks are to my shoulders and I can't wait until they get to my shoulderblades. I have styling options that I had never dreamed of before I was locked. My husband loves my locks. He likes the fact that I no longer have bad hair days. My locks have increased my joy in living. My students (I teach 8th graders) love my locks. They definitely have increased my "coolness" quotient in the classroom. My girls, in particular, have been avidly watching my hair grow from the tops of my ears to my shoulders. Below are pictures of my Sisterlocks, which are now two years old. Our children need examples of natural hair in their world. Valerie
